Care and Maintenance

After purchase, it is important to keep up with maintenance of the carving to ensure it lasts. To reduce the risks of checking keep out of direct sun light. If this in not feasible it is important to treat the carving with an oil based preservative. We suggest Boiled Linseed Oil but any oil-based preservative will work. In sunny locations apply twice per summer or as needed, shady locations less often. (Make sure the carving can dry for 48 hrs. after application) You can touch up carvings with spray paint.

To control rot and fungus keep your carving in a ventilated area and elevate your carvings by raising them off the ground either by stones, asphalt shingles etc. this will allow the wood to breath.

Carvings are intended for outdoor use.

Some cracking (checking) and knots (called birthmarks) are naturally found in log carvings adding to the uniqueness of the carving. To minimize cracking please follow these instructions. Leave your new carving out of the direct sunlight if possible. Try to keep your carving away from heat sources such as dryer vents, furnace exhaust, etc. This will slow the drying process and help protect it from large cracks.

Why does wood crack? The outside wood is drying at a faster rate than the core thus cracking occurs. To minimize the cracking it is imperative that the drying process has to be slowed down, this can be achieved by keeping your carving out of intense sunlight and heat sources. Also by following regular maintenance of applying oil based preservatives to moisturize the wood fibers. We suggest boiled linseed oil, applied at a mixture of 50/50 with mineral spirits. The boiled linseed oil works as a preservative, moisturizer and gives your carving a slight sheen. We suggest a minimum of once a year but more often is better.
